A 94-year-old World War Two veteran will have to go abroad to break his world speed record in an autogyro because of red tape in Britain.
Former James Bond stuntman Ken Wallis, MBE, wants to reach a new break neck pace of 140mph over 3km in his amazing hand built twin propeller machine.
The retired RAF wing commander, who flew Little Nellie in the 1967 Bond film You Only Live Twice, set the world speed record in 2002 when his autogyro reached 129.1 mph.
He wants to attempt a new world aviation record this year to coincide with the centenary celebration of the first flight of the Walbro monoplane - a revolutionary aircraft designed and flown by his father Horace and Uncle Perry.
But new red tape introduced by the Civil Aviation Authority since 2002 now restricts autogyros to a maximum speed of just 70mph in Britain - half the speed Wing Commander Wallis wants to clock.
So he will be forced to travel to France or America to make the record attempt.
"I've held the world speed record for ages now but I'd just like to push it a bit further," he said.
"I am still waiting for the paper work to come through, but the Civil Aviation Authority is very negative.
"I think the only way I can do it without messing around is to travel to France or America.
"The Americans would welcome me over there. They have said they will be pleased to have the aircraft transferred there."
Wing Cmdr Wallis started flying autogyros in 1959 and was the first instructor and examiner for the flying machine.
In 1975 he broke the record for the longest flight in an autogyro when he flew the length of Britain.
He keeps a fleet of 20 autogyros, including a replica of Little Nellie, in a mini hangar at his home in Norfolk and still flies daily.
"They are one of the safest machines to fly because if the engine stops the roters keep turning, so it can be landed," he said.
"Unlike other aircraft it can fly in all sorts of conditions, even stormy weather.
"I used to fly to work every day on the south coast, now I tend to fly more locally."
Wing Cmdr Wallis, who has been a pilot for 73 years, was sent up in his autogyro to help with the search when Lord Lucan went missing and has also been on a mission to find the Loch Ness monster.
But one of his most exciting experiences was as the stunt double for Sean Connery in You Only Live Twice, dodging bullets from helicopters in his heavily armoured aircraft.
"Sean Connery had to sit in the autogyro and put on the helmet, but then he had to get out and it was me who did the first take-off," he said.
"I had to do 81 flights and was in the air for more than 44 hours. It was hard work but fun when it was finished.
"The funny thing is I don't even get a mention in the credits."

Mastodontul acesta a reusit sa faca si desprinderi de sol ? Ca de zbor nu cred ca a fost instare : greutate enorma, fara prerotator, fara stabilizator orizontal, diametru rotor mic ( din foto nu prea-mi este clar cate pale are - cele 2 vizibile par a fi pozitionate la 90* - perspectiva deformata sau are 3-4 pale ? ).
Una peste alta, pare a fi un Bensen clasic.
Sper ca ne vei mai da amanunte. Ai fost implicat direct in constructie ?

Rotorul este un Bensen cu 2pale,de 6m diametru,capul rotor este de la un francez(nu mai stiu care),greutatea era in limite normale pt. vremea aceea,stabilizator orizontal urma sa fie montat dupa primele teste.Eu am fost constructorul.

intra bine in autorotatie,cam 60/70m de pe loc si mult mai repede daca il invarteam putin cu mana(rotorul).La una din curse am deviat de pe portiunea buna pt. zbor,o groapa mascata de iarba si putin vant lateral,am capotat.Rezultatul,o pala rupta,ampenajul vertical retezat,eu,o sperietura mare si o arsura la cot(de la esapament).A fost refacut destul de repede,mai exista o pereche de pale si asteptam o zi buna de zbor.Intre timp se aude la forurile superioare de realizarea noastra(Casa pionerilor,"sponsor"principal) si ni se anunta o vizita a TV Romane,care urma sa filmeze si sa prezinte realizarile "marete".Intr-o zi de toamna,vine TVR-ul,adunare mare pe faleza de la Tulcea,urma sa se filmeze o trecere cu autogirul cu motorul pornit,fara pale montate(era aglomeratie mare).Pregatesc ei camerele,iar rulajul la facut prietenul meu(cel care regla avansul,in poza de mai sus),pornim motorul,se da publicul la distanta, incepe rulajul din ce in ce mai accelerat si se proiecteaza in Dunare.L-au scos scafandrii dupa vreo ora jumatate,motivul nici acum nu il stiu,totul functiona perfect,probat si dupa ce a fost scos din Dunare.Apoi,cei mai vechi stiu cum era zeci de declaratii.........Pacat ceva foarte frumos terminat foarte urat.

Nu-mi vine sa cred ...!!!! asta da surpriza !!!!! jos PALARIA in fata D-vostra am toata admiratia pt. munca D-voastra ..... pe care o urmaream cu interes intr-un articol aparut in revista Sport si Tehnica "internetul nostru" de atunci. Am construit un giroplan macheta imediat dupa articol...apoi au urmat o gramada de esecuri incercari si in final reusita la acea ora nu dispuneam de motoare , servouri si radiocomenzi asa ca l-am ridicat in vant exact ca pe un zmeu....apoi am construit si un deltaplan cu niste amici mai mult o improvizatie cu care era sa ne rupem picioarele era facut din folie de sera si rigle de lemn iar harnasamentul era un ham de alpinism cu vesta cum se purta in acea vreme am zburat /saltat mai mult... a fost SUPERB!! dar ne-am orpit dupa accidentul usor care ne-a speriat rau de tot..... virusul era deja in sange asa ca astazi zbor cu parapanta din pacate ocazinal timpul bata-l vina ..timp care se pare ca pe D-voastra nu va afectat deloc ci dimpotriva l-ati fructificat la sange.....Cuvintele sunt de prisos ....sunteti un pionier al aviatiei experimentale din Romania si un model pt generatiile de "mijloc" si pentru asta va respect ....de la Aurel Vlaicu la Aurel Turpan de la Vladimir Novotchi la Iosif Silimon
Azi este o zi cu emotie o zi memorabila este ziua in care v-am scris pt prima data dupa o tentativa esuata acum mai bine de 20 de ani. La multi ani MAESTRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.....lucrurile s-au derulat astfel:....vorbind cu domnul George Craioveanu acesta va adreseaza o invitatie in data de 31.07.2010 sambata, la inagurarea unui nou aerodrom langa Vatra Dornei unde va fi prezent si un girocopter !!! Mai mult revista Pilot Magazin va pregateste in viitorul apropiat o surpriza!!!!!!
P.S. transportul, cazarea si masa va vor fi decontate .....
